I was actually going to post this December but then I brought out the shortbread from the oven and I was like, ‘you know what? Let’s keep this in the drafts.’
At that time, I did not know I was going to have to start cooking for myself at such short notice but well…I moved out of res for my remaining two courses and now I’m in charge of planning and preparing my own food.
Like for me to eat I actually have to make food, do you understand!!?
I paid for groceries today and almost fainted at the self-checkout! You lot should have seen my face when I was Ubering home. My stop was supposed to be at another grocery store cus I still had things to get but I think the Uber guy saw the distress on my face and he was like, ‘imma drop this bitch at home so she can offload her bags and bring her back to her stop for no extra charge before she cries in my car’.
Adulting 101 is not looking good on me.
Anyways, I digress.
So there are only two cookies I love in this world, shortbread and Danish cookies and I actually like baking even if I don’t know how to, so it makes sense that I decided to try to make my own shortbread right?
After all, it’s literally a three-step process.
Cream sugar and butter.
Add flour and knead
Roll out the dough and cut to desired shape.
I did exactly that y’all. I followed the recipe. I even measured the ingredients correctly and let me tell you- I never measure anything when I bake. (Don’t ask).
So now, tell me why my own shortbread decided to look like this.
Instead of these...
Tell me why it wasn't white and soft like a normal shortbread should be. Tell me why my own was hard. As in HARDDD. As in, I actually injured my gums in the days it took me to finish eating it.
(In Cardi B's voice)
WHaT wAS tHE reASON!!?!!
I’m posting this now because this is about to become a pattern. I’m about to have a lot of ‘the meal I pictured’ vs ‘the meal I cooked’ experiences.
So, Happy New Year and cheers to more cooking chronicles. Watch how I go from a cooking disaster to Chef C.
For the ones that can bake out there, what are your tips for a shortbread that is not 'jawbreaking'? For the rest of you, how is 2021 treating you?
