My Top 5 for 2020

E be fingz...

I got the idea for this blog from one of the bloggers I follow on Twitter, Tiffany, who got it from Zoella who got it from… I think it ends there.

2020 has been a mad year… and that’s putting it lightly. I was in this room on Clubhouse and they were asking each of us to rank the year out of 10. There were 2’s and 6’s and 7’s and it got to me and I say 8. Why? They ask, ‘Well, it’s not been bad for me.’ I say, ‘-things happened but personally, I give it an 8, overall I think it was maybe a 2,3?’

You all, this was before 2020 decided to give me pick 2, literally. This was when I thought I was done with Uni, finally. This was a few days before my advisor was like ‘bitch you have two more courses!’. Tell me how I thought the entire year that at least, I would be done with Uni and 2020 the same year, killing two loud, annoying, draining birds with one stone, and they decide to each throw their own stones back at me. Five days before the year ends!

The streets are really rugged, y’all.

All I have to say is that, if ‘spoke too fast’ was a person, it would be me.

Regardless, 2020 has still been memorable and besides WW3, and masks, and weddings, and banana bread, and everything is cake, and Trump losing, and protests, and Black people getting superpowers and Taylor Swift’s double surprise album, there are personal things that I would always associate with this year. Things that enveloped me with bubble wrap, put a blanket over me and rolled me over glitter throughout the entire year to distract me.

Here are my top 5s of 2020.

MOVIE The best movie I watched this year has to be Little Women (2019). It also has a special place in my heart because it was the last movie I watched in the cinema before outside went AWOL, and also the only one I watched this year at the cinema. Everything about the movie was beautiful but that scene with Jo and her mum at the attic where she says she cares more to be loved and would accept Laurie proposal if he asked again… That has to be one of my best movie scenes on the list I keep somewhere in my head. This movie is about to become to me what Home Alone is to people at Christmas.

"I care more to be loved. I want to be loved."

BOOK I think everyone that reads on my Twitter has heard me talk about this book at least once in their existence. This is my comfort book. When I say, wrap me with warmth, what I really mean is, read me Carry On. I read it at the beginning of lockdown when everyone was leaving dorm and I think that’s why I associate it with warmth because it kept me company for that short period. My favourite quote from the book was when Baz says, ‘Simon Snow is still going to die kissing me. Just not today’. I died and resurrected y’all.

Honourable mention for “I let myself slip away… Just to stay sane. Just to get through it. And when I felt myself slipping too far, I held on to the one thing I’m always sure of — Blue eyes. Bronze curls. The fact that Simon Snow is the most powerful magician alive. That nothing can hurt him, not even me. That Simon Snow is alive. And I’m hopelessly in love with him.”

"Simon Snow is still going to die kissing me. Just not today"

SONG If they could ask everyone in my life one question, ‘what artist do you think sang her favourite song?’ I cannot think of one person that would not get it right. This song came out mid-year and turns out, according to Apple music replay, it’s my most played song (104 plays). I solemnly swear I played it more times than that but- okay? The song is Cardigan and this song (the entire album tbh) saw me through the entire year. I would say my favourite line, but it’s the entire bridge. Everything from, ‘But I knew you’d linger like a tattoo kiss…’

"And when I felt like I was an old cardigan under someone's bed, you put me on and said I was your favourite"

MEMORY I think my best memory from this year was the beginning of summer and lockdown when no one was going anywhere and we were all at home and I think for one entire month or more, I slept amidst facetime calls. I think that was one of the closest I ever came with my friends. I don’t know what it was about that period in time but it felt like we were all suspended in this happy place. Sometimes, I think I’m still stuck there mentally.

NEW DISCOVERY I discovered webtoons this year and I’m still shouting about it to the special few that haven’t muted me on Twitter. Lore Olympus, Subzero, The doctors are out and Novæ (I discovered that one the last quarter of the year though) became my night delights. Even in 2021, if you ever walk into me, smiling at my phone under my duvet, think webcomic before you think anything else.

"I love the way you treat me and I want to feel that way all the time."

So yeah, there’s that and a special shout out to tea. If I were to overdose on one thing this year, it would be a tie between tea and cramps drugs. That’s a story for another year though.
