Forgive me as I blow my trumpet but it appears I might have a reputation for keeping a pretty little, organised space. It’s quite on brand if I may say so myself.
But on a more serious note, one thing my bedroom is, always, is guest ready. Far be it I’m caught unprepared (unless it’s a Sunday, in which case I might be caught in the middle of laundering).
But after yet another admiration of how I keep my bedroom clean and tidy looking, I thought I might share some of my insufferable wisdom.
Here are 6 ways to spruce up your space:
1. Keep your sightline tidy
One of my main determinants when it comes to furniture placement, is what passers-by will see without fully entering my bedroom If I were to leave the door open. Whatever it is, it should be pleasing to the eyes. Not a clutter of clothes on the chair, or on the floor, not a plain wardrobe, or a messy bed.

2. Keep the plastic junk out of the way
We live in a godawful world of plastic, so it’s impossible to keep plastic out of the way altogether, but as a rule of thumb, I try to keep the ugly plastic out of the way if I can. No one wants to see those lotions, hair stuff, medicine, deodorant, not on your dresser, not out in the open. Put them in bins in your closet. When I have to display, I opt for displaying products in glass vials instead- they’re easier looking on the eyes, and create an illusion of less clutter.
3. Fragrance!
Transforming your space doesn’t just end with the eyes, you need to appeal to other senses, and scents play a big role. From plug-in air fresheners to electric wax warmers, diffusers, candles, room sprays and traditional air fresheners, you have options to keep your bedroom always smelling inviting.
4. Plants
Everyone knows having greenery livens up any space, and if you don’t have a green thumb, opt for fake plants. They serve the same purpose and are low (no) maintenance.
5. Have a (tidy) bedside table
As a matter of fact, I think a bedside table (note that I said ‘a’ cause it doesn’t have to be a pair) is an essential piece of furniture for a bedroom, and what you put on it, can make or mar your bedroom. Keep the top of your nightstand somewhat minimalist so it creates a clean-looking appearance, and utilise the cupboards for essentials.
6. Actually clean your room, often.
Well you see the thing is, sprucing up your bedroom is not a one-time thing, or a seasonal thing, it is a lifestyle.

Once you’ve spruced your bedroom to your liking, all you have to do is maintain it. Here are some of my tips:
- Weekly laundering, daily bedmaking, occasionally dusting surfaces, decluttering.
- Clothes are either dirty(laundry basket) or clean(closet), no in-between that ends up on a pile on a chair.
- Clean laundry should be folded into your wardrobe in less than one business day.
- Remember it’s a bedroom, kitchen utensils do not belong there, most especially not used ones!
- Put everything back in its place after using or not using it (clothes, shoes, makeup, hangers, everything). This particular tip, coupled with making my bed daily, is why I’m always guest ready, because at no point do I have a messy clutter.
