I want to pat myself on the back and say, ‘you did it, you read more than one book’. And that is correct-ish, if you include the two comics.
But I can assure you December would be better because as I write this, I’m on my second book.
So what did I read in November? Let’s revisit.
Belladonna- Adalyn Grace
RATING: ★★★★
One thing about me, if ‘the darkness’ or ‘death’, or hades, or someone with ‘shadowy’ powers, is one of the main characters in a book, best believe I’m going to pick it up. I can never miss an opportunity to read, ‘the shadows wrapped itself around him’, ‘he was one with the darkness’.
This is a murder mystery where Signa (the main character) has the ability to see spirits, Death, and coexist in that plane between death and the afterlife. Following the death of another one of her guardians, she’s adopted by her last living relatives, the wealthy Hawthornes, but comes to learn not long after that there’s something unnatural about the death making its rounds in the households. Using her abilities, she has to stop death before it’s too late for the rest of the Hawthornes.
I gave it a 4-star because it’s an enjoyable, easy breezy read with a catch-you-unawares plot twist, but throughout the book, I kept trying to picture Death the way he was written and I just could not conceptualise him. There were a number of scenes with Signa and Death where I put the book down and asked myself, ‘how would this work?’
Overall if you’re looking for an easy-going YA fantasy, this would be it. It’s similar to Addie Larue only due to the existence of a darkness-like character but where you could tell that Luc had lived for centuries, Death in this book felt like a young adult character.
Blood Stained Teeth- Christian Ward et al.
RATING: ★★★
This is the first physical comic I’ve read in a long time.
Atticus Sloane, the main character has been turning humans into vampires for a price, but the Firstborn Council has found out, and he has a month to kill everyone he’s turned or- you know the rest.
The twist is, there’s someone killing the firstborn vampires for their blood, but you would not get to know much because book 1 ends right after it starts. It’s like the author wrote the complete book and then blindly divided it into different books. For that reason, I gave it a 3 star.
DC vs. Vampires- James Tynion IV et al.
RATING: ★★★★
The queen of vampires is dead, the vampires have gone rogue, and a war is coming. But not to worry, that’s why we have the Justice League right?…rightt? Wrong. The Vampires have infiltrated the Justice League, and now Batman and Oliver have to vet out who is and isn’t infected in their midst while being haunted by their colleagues (for lack of a better word). In short, the justice league are fighting each other.
Now this one did not feel like it was split blindly so I enjoyed it up till the ending. Plus this being my first DC comic, I was so excited whenever I came across a character I was familiar with from the DC shows. I’m definitely picking up volume 2 of this.
Have you read any of these books? What did you read in November or plan to read this coming month? Let me know!
